● For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 (KJV)
A teenager named Röttger found himself marching amongst the German soldiers during World War II. He himself did not have any personal reason to be there except that he was drafted by the Nazi regime. So, he followed the other soldiers into Hungary, to a territory that was occupied by German forces. While he was there, he found a beautifully crafted crucifix necklace lying on the ground. He was neither a churchgoer nor knew anything about the cross, but the boy took it and wore it around his neck. Two years passed since the boy had taken ownership of the necklace. By then, Germany had been defeated by the Soviet Union, and the boy along with many German soldiers were taken prisoners. German invasion of the Soviet Union resulted in countless death, and the German prisoners were invariably sentenced to death. The boy too was standing in line about to be executed when one of the Soviet soldiers noticed the crucifix around his neck. He pushed the boy away from the line and said, “someone wearing a cross around his neck couldn’t have followed Nazi’s orders willingly. He must be returned at once.” After having only narrowly escaped death by the thinnest of margin, Rottger accepted Jesus as his Savior. He would tell the story routinely to his children as a chance to reflect upon the true meaning of salvation. Röttger’s son was so moved by the story that he would later donate the crucifix necklace to the cross gallery at an old village church. Like Röttger, we have all sinned and had been sentenced to death, but Jesus gave us new life by dying on the cross.
Live every day of your life with the joy of someone who has been given another chance at life. Dedicate your life to Jesus who saved us from eternal damnation. Amen!! Lord, let me remember in my heart how you paid with your life for my sin on the cross and saved me.
Let us remember Jesus who died for us whenever we look upon the cross.
