목사님께서는 미국에서 변호사로도 일하셨는데요, 이후에 신학을 공부하고 목회자가 된 이후, 찬양사역을 통해 한국에서 많은 열매를 거두셨고, 지금도 찬양사역을 하고 계십니다. 예수 그리스도를 믿고 목회자로 부름을 받은 이야기에 대해 말씀해주시길 바랍니다.

감사하게도 저는 독실한 기독교 가정에서 자랐습니다. 그래서 어린 시절부터 평생을 교회에서 열심히 참여하며 사는 축복을 누릴 수 있었습니다. 저는 침례 교단의 교회를 다녔고, 제가 아주 어렸을 때부터 부모님께서 말씀을 열심히 가르쳐 주셨으며, 그리스도를 믿음으로 구원에 이르도록 저를 인도해 주셨습니다.

이후 참석한 침례교 여름 성경 학교에서 사역자로 부르시는 그리스도의 부르심에 기꺼이 순종하기로 결심했습니다. 물론 사역자의 부르심에 순종했지만, 저는 사역자뿐 아니라 세상의 직업을 통해서 다양한 방법으로 그리스도를 섬길 수 있다고 생각했습니다.

저는 대학시절 제 신학의 학문적 멘토이자 영적 멘토이신 프란시스 쉐퍼 목사님의 가르침으로부터 큰 영향을 받았습니다. 쉐퍼 목사님으로부터 가르침을 받는 귀한 시간을 보냈고, 이후 좀 더 배우기 위해 스위스의 라브리 공동체에 참여했습니다.
이 기간 동안 게리 하버마스 박사님 역시 멘토로서 저에게 많은 영향을 주셨습니다. 사도바울이 사역자였던 동시에 천막 짓는 자였다는 것을 상기하며, 이후 저도 법을 공부하여 사역자가 되기 전까지 몇 년 동안 변호사로 일했습니다. 당시 받았던 교육과 경험은 참으로 감사한 시간이었습니다. 이를 통해 어떻게 그리스도인들이 다양한 모습으로 세상에서 그리스도를 섬기고 하나님의 영광을 위해 사는지 배울 수 있었기 때문입니다.

미국에서 몇 년간 법조인으로 지낸 후, 기독교 사역자로서 하나님을 섬기도록 하나님께서 이끄시는 때가 되었음을 감지했습니다. 이에 따라 미국에서 몇 년간 설교와 가르침, 찬양과 예배 사역을 감당했고, 이후 주님께서 저를 한국으로 인도하셨습니다. 그리고 지금 저는 한국에서 살며 목회자의 길을 가고 있습니다. 저를 인도해주신 영적인 여정에 대해 주님께 깊은 감사를 드리며, 주님의 신실하심에 제 마음이 겸손해질 따름입니다.

많은 찬양의 작사와 작곡을 하셨는데 대표곡을 소개해주시고 찬양사역기관인 레이지파 미니스트리와 분당에 위치한 주님의교회를 소개해주세요.

한국에서 그리스도를 섬기는 특권을 주신 하나님께 감사드리며, 하나님께서 한국 교회에 신실하게 일하실 것을 계속해서 기도하고 있습니다.
개인적으로 하나님을 예배하는 여러 표현 중 하나가 바로 찬양 곡을 쓰는 것입니다. 제가 작곡한 찬양 곡 대부분은 개인적 경험을 토대로 쓰여진 것입니다. 예를 들어, '영원한 왕 예수'라는 곡은 독일에서의 선교 기간 중 작곡했습니다. 마틴 루터와 요한 제바스티안 바흐가 살았던 지역을 지나 아우토반을 달리는 도중 이 곡의 가사와 멜로디가 제 마음 속으로 홍수처럼 밀려들어왔습니다. 마치 천국이 열려서 영광스러운 무언가를 듣는 경험과도 같았습니다. 한 순간에 가사와 멜로디 전부가 터져 나왔던 이 경험이 저에게 선물처럼 주어졌습니다. 당시 차가 달리던 중이었고, 잠시 차를 정차할 곳이 없는 상황이었습니다. 그래서 옆 자리에 있던 아내에게 얼른 종이와 펜을 달라고 부탁했고, 그 즉시 가사와 코드를 빠르게 적어 내려갔습니다. 이 찬양은 제가 가장 좋아하는 찬양 중 하나입니다.
'새롭게 하소서' 는 제가 삶을 되돌아 보며 기도할 때 작곡한 곡입니다. 당시 저는 제 열정을 새롭게 하시고, 주님을 향한 열정을 부으시며 새롭게 기름 부어 주시기를 성령님께 구하고 있었습니다.

'오직 주만 따르리'는 찬송가로 지은 곡이고, 헌신하는 그리스도인의 삶에 관해 가사를 썼습니다. 곡의 후렴구는 짧은 기도의 내용을 담고 있습니다. 이 곡을 쓸 때 말씀 구절과 시적인 운율을 사용하여 그리스도 안에서 우리의 여정을 한 곡 안에 담고자 했습니다.
15년 전 주님께서 우리를 인도해 주셔서 레위지파 사역을 시작하게 되었습니다. 그로부터 몇 년 뒤에는 주님의 교회를 세워 오늘날 판교 캠퍼스와 부산 캠퍼스로 확장되었습니다. 이 일을 행하신 하나님께 감사드리며, 장차 하나님께서 신실하게 이루실 모든 일들을 기대합니다.

목사님의 찬양사역과 만드신 곡들이 큰 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 찬양을 작곡할때 성령의 인도하심과 에피소드를 말씀해주세요.

저에게 있어 곡을 쓰는 행위는 매우 자연스럽고 직관적이며 영적인 과정입니다. 그러나 이와 동시에 작곡에는 구조적인 훈련이 필요합니다. 작곡의 기본적인 체계와 구조를 배움으로써 작곡을 통해 영적인 표현뿐 아니라 창의성과 직관을 자유롭게 발휘할 수 있습니다. 이는 미술과 같은 다른 형태의 예술 분야에도 적용되는 원칙입니다. 전문적인 예술가가 되려면 우선 그 분야를 배워야 하며 기초를 잘 닦아야 합니다. 작곡의 기본적인 규칙과 구조를 알면 음악의 틀 안에서 더욱더 자유롭게 표현할 수 있습니다.

수년간 많은 곡을 작곡하면서 이제 곡을 쓰는 것은 저에게 무엇보다도 자연스러운 일이 되었습니다. 이와 함께 음악적 표현과 작사를 함에 있어 다양한 스타일을 시도해 제 자신에게 즐거운 도전이 되기도 합니다.
새 찬양을 쓸 때마다, 친밀함 중에 하나님을 예배하는 개인적 예배의 시간이 되도록 하고 있습니다. 작곡의 과정이 개인적인 영적 예배의 시간이 된다면 다른 예배자들 역시 제 찬양 곡을 통해 주께 마음을 드릴 수 있다고 생각합니다.

한편, 회중 찬양은 찬양을 드리는 주체인 회중을 고려해야 합니다. 회중 찬양 곡은 곡과 가사뿐 아니라 영적으로, 또한 음악적으로 회중 찬양에 적합하게 작곡되어야 합니다. 오늘날 한국에서 여러 음악적 장르와 기법을 활용한 다양하고도 풍성한 회중 찬양이 나오고 있는데, 이건 정말 대단한 일이며 꼭 필요한 것이라고 생각합니다.

찬양은 마음과 생각을 함께 드리는 것이므로, 교회 안에서 새로운 음악적 표현이 계속되어야 합니다. 이로써 다음 세대의 예배자들이 일어나게 됩니다. 지금의 젊은 예배자들이 훗날 다음 세대의 멘토가 될 것이기에, 찬양 곡은 성경적이어야 하고, 기름부음이 있어야 하며, 기독교 문화를 가져올 수 있어야 한다고 생각합니다.

사모님은 한국분으로 목사님 설교하실 때 통역도 하시는데 사모님을 소개해 주실 수 있나요?

아내는 제 가장 친한 친구입니다. 저희는 한 팀으로 항상 모든 것을 같이 합니다. 제 아내 성희 브래너 사모는 통·번역 사역을 통해 교회에서 큰 역할을 담당할 뿐 아니라, 교회 내 다양한 사역을 섬기고 있습니다. 올해 저희 교회가 초등학생을 위한 베리타스(Veritas) 기독학교를 시작했는데, 성희 사모가 교장으로서 학교의 비전을 세우는 일에 동참하고 있습니다. 가족으로서, 또한 함께 사역하는 그리스도의 일꾼으로서 우리를 함께 인도하시고 공급하시는 신실하신 하나님께 감사드립니다.

목사님의 앞으로의 비젼과 기도제목을 말씀해주세요.

그리스도의 교회를 신실하게 목양하고 양육하며, 세상에 변화를 가져오는 참된 그리스도의 영적 제자를 세우는 것이 제 비전입니다. 그리스도의 몸인 한국 교회와 전 세계의 기독교 예배자들에게 영적인 격려와 축복을 드리고자 계속해서 기도하고 있습니다. 이로써 예배와 기도, 복음 전도를 통해 그리스도의 교회에 영적인 부흥이 오기를 소망합니다.

저는 하나님께서 그리스도인을 세상 문화에 빛과 소금으로 부르셨다고 믿습니다. 그래서 저희는 특히 한국의 어린이 및 청소년 교육에 주목하고 있습니다. 오늘날 많은 수의 다음 세대가 세속주의 및 물질주의 세계관에 따른 교육을 받고 있습니다.
그러나 그리스도인은 세상을 변화시키도록 부르심 받았기에 분명한 성경적 세계관을 가지고 다음 세대를 교육시키는 것이 우리의 영적 사명이라고 생각합니다. 이를 통해 예수님을 믿는 한국의 다음 세대가 예수 그리스도를 따르는 자로서 진리를 알고, 영적인 자유와 권위 안에서 걸어갈 수 있기 때문입니다.

목사님께서 좋아하시는 성경구절과 COVID-19과 아시아 증오 혐오 범죄로 힘들고 지친 재미교포들에게 신앙의 메세지를 전해주세요.

저는 사도바울이 기록한 고린도후서 2장 14절의 말씀을 참 좋아합니다. “항상 우리를 그리스도 안에서 이기게 하시고 우리로 말미암아 각처에서 그리스도를 아는 냄새를 나타내시는 하나님께 감사하노라.” 이는 진리이며 우리에게 용기를 주시는 말씀입니다.
하나님의 약속에 집중할 때, 우리는 소망 안에서 용기를 얻고 회복됩니다. 또한 사도바울은 말합니다. “다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다 소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 하지 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이니 (롬5:3~5).”

그리스도인에게는 영생의 소망이 있으며, 이는 우리를 절대 실망시키지 않습니다. 현재의 문제나 불확실성에 집중한다면 쉽게 낙심하고 소망을 잃어버리게 됩니다. 그러나 하나님의 선하심과 신실하심, 하나님의 신실하신 약속에 우리의 눈을 고정시키기로 결정한다면, 성령님을 통해 우리의 마음에 부어 주시는 하나님의 사랑으로 용기를 얻을 수 있습니다.

오늘날 참으로 많은 문제 상황들이 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 그리스도인으로서 어둡고 혼란스러운 시대에 소망을 비추는 빛과 진리의 불빛으로서 살며 하늘의 해답이 되는 삶을 살기로 선택할 수 있습니다. 그리스도인이 끊임없이 기도하며 서로를 격려할 때, 불확실하고 어려운 시대에서도 신실하신 하나님께서 그분의 교회를 승리의 길로 안전하게 인도하실 것입니다.

Pastor Scott Brenner (Senior Pastor, the Lord's Church, Representative of the Levites Ministry)

1. Pastor Brenner you have a background in working as a lawyer in the United States. After studying theology and being ordained as a pastor, you came to Korea and did a lot of work in ministry and praise ministry. Please tell the story of how you came to believe in Jesus Christ and the calling to become a pastor.

I have been very blessed to grow up in a devout Christian family, so I have enjoyed the blessing of being active in church my entire life. My background is Baptist, and my father and mother faithfully taught me the scriptures and led me to saving faith in Christ when I was very young. Later as a youth while attending a Baptist summer youth camp, I willingly surrendered to Christ's call to serve Him in full time ministry. Even so, I also believed I would serve Christ in many ways, both in professional ministry and also in secular vocational work. During my college years, I was greatly influenced by the teaching and ministry of Dr. Francis Schaeffer, whom I consider as a spiritual and theological mentor. I was privileged to sit under his teaching, and later attended L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland for further study. Dr. Gary Habermas was also an important mentor and influence during these years. I recalled that the apostle Paul was both a professional tentmaker and a full time minister, and so I later studied and practiced law as an attorney for a number of years prior to beginning full time ministry. I am very thankful for this education and experience, as it taught me how all Christians are to serve Christ in every area of society, and to do all to the glory of God. After some years of practicing law in the United States, I sensed the timing of God leading me to devote my time to fully serving Him vocationally in Christian ministry. After serving in ministry for a number of years in the United States, through teaching and preaching and also in praise and worship ministry, the Lord led me to Korea, where I now live and minister in pastoral ministry. I am very thankful for the spiritual journey the Lord has led me in, and am humbled by His faithfulness.

2. You wrote and composed a lot of gospel songs (hymns). Please introduce to us some representative songs, and the Levites Ministry and the Church of the Lord located in Bundang.

I am very thankful to God for the privilege of serving Christ in Korea, and continually pray for God's faithful work among His churches in Korea. Composing worship songs is an expression of personal worship for me. The songs I've written usually come out of personal experience. For example, I wrote the song영원한 왕 예수 (Jesus King Eternal) during an extended time of ministry in Germany. As we were driving on the autobahn through the region where both Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach once lived, the melody and lyrics of this song suddenly began flooded my hearing in my mind. It was as if the heavens had opened and I was hearing something glorious. It was truly a gift, as it came to me all at once. As I was driving the car, and there was nowhere to safely pull the car over, I asked my wife to quickly give me a pen and paper, and I quickly jotted down the lyrics and chords to the song. It is one of my favorite songs. The song새롭게 하소서 (Renovate), was written during a season of reflection and prayer, as I was asking the Holy Spirit to renew zeal, anointing and passion for the Lord. The song 오직 주만 따르리 (My Soul Will Follow) was written as a hymn, in which the verses reflect on the commitment of Christian living, and the chorus is a simple prayer of devotion. This song I took some time to write, using scripture and poetic metaphors to tell a singular story about our journey in Christ. Fifteen years ago, the Lord led us to launch Levites Ministry, and several years later to plant The Lord's Church, currently with two campuses in Pangyo and Busan. We are thankful for all God has done, and are expectant concerning all that God will faithfully accomplish in the future.

3. Praise ministries and compositions in Korea are loved. Please tell us about how the Holy Spirit has guided you when you compose your songs.

For me, songwriting is a very natural, intuitive and spiritual process, yet at the same time involves necessary structure and discipline. Knowing the basic songwriting framework and structure allows for greater freedom for creative, intuitive, spiritual expression in songwriting. This is also true for other types of artistic expression, such as drawing or painting. Before one can become a skilled artist, one must first learn and master the basics. Knowing the basic rules and structure of songwriting allows for freedom of expression within the musical and lyrical framework. Having written many songs over many years, the songwriting process is now more natural and fluid for me, which frees me to challenge myself to try different styles of lyrical and musical expression. Whenever I write a new worship song, I allow the experience of songwriting to become a personal time of intimate worship for me. If the songwriting process personally engages me spiritually, then I can imagine that it may also engage the hearts of other worshipers as well. At the same time, congregational worship must be well suited to its intended audience, so the worship composition must be appropriate, spiritually, musically and lyrically, for congregational worship. These days in Korea, there is a greater variety and abundance of musical expression and style within congregational worship, which I think is great (and necessary). Worship should engage the heart as well as the mind, so we continually need new musical expression within the church as subsequent generations of worshipers emerge. Today's young worshipers will become tomorrow's mentors for future generations, so I believe it is important that our worship songs be a) Biblical, b) anointed, and c) culturally engaging.

4. Your wife is Korean, and she also interprets when she preaches. Can you please introduce her?

My wife is my very best friend. We always do everything together as a couple. Sunghee not only plays a huge part in our church through her translation, but also in teaching and serving through our various ministry platforms and in our church. This year, we started a new Christian school for elementary students called Veritas Elementary, where she is helping building our vision as the principal. We are very blessed and thankful for God's faithfulness in leading and sustaining us as a family and as Christ's servants in ministry.

5. Please tell us of your future vision and prayer topics.

Our vision is to continually and faithfully shepherd and pastor Christ's church, and to make real spiritual disciples of Christ who will make a difference in the world. We continually pray that we may be a spiritual blessing and encouragement to the body of Christ in Korea, and also to Christian worshipers throughout the world, so that Christ's Church can be spiritually revived through worship, prayer and evangelism. We believe that Christians are called as salt and light to the surrounding culture, so we are especially focused on education, especially among the Korean children and youth, many of whom are being taught a secular, materialist worldview. Because Christians are called to change the world, we believe it is our spiritual mandate to educate our young people with a thoroughly Biblical worldview, so that as followers of Jesus Christ, the next generation of Korean believers can know the truth and walk in spiritual freedom and authority.

6. Please deliver a message of faith and your favorite Bible verse to Koreans who are tired of COVID-19 and Asian hate crimes in USA.

I love what the apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 2:14: “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.” These words are so true and encouraging! When we focus on the promises of God, we can be encouraged and restored in hope. Paul further writes in Romans 5:3-5: “[W]e also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance, and perseverance, character, and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Christians have an eternal hope that never disappoints. If we focus on the current problems and uncertainties, it can be easy to become discouraged and feel hopeless. But as we choose to focus on the goodness and faithfulness of God and His faithful promises, we can be encouraged through the love of God that He pours into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Despite the many problems, as Christians we can choose to become part of heaven's solution, by living as hopeful beacons of light and truth in a dark and confusing time. As Christians continually pray for and encourage one another, God will be faithful to certainly lead His church safely and victoriously through this uncertain and difficult time.
